Special Troop 101 Interests

Venture Scouting

Our high school age scouts participate in Venture activities, with a focus on developing mounteering skills, like rock climbing, winter mountain hiking, rappelling, and mountain backpacking.

Cycling
Because we live in a very rural area we have an abundance of back roads and woodlands that make for some great local bike trips. Many of our scouts are avid bike riders and earn Cycling Merit Badge.

Mountain Hiking
Foster is about a 4-hour drive from the White Mountains of New Hampshire, which offer some excellent trails for all ability levels. We have taken many troop hikes to the summits of Mt. Monadnock, Mt. Cardigan, and Mt. Moosilauke, as well as several other local trails and mountains. This experience teaches scouts the importance of being prepared for all types of situations as well as an appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors.
Canoeing
We're about 5 hours from the Saco River in Maine, where we've canoed from 25 to 50 miles on various trips over the years. The Saco has been the site of some great paddle battles between troop members and adults. We've also taken some exciting local trips on the Wood River in RI.

Summer Camp
Each summer we look forward to a full week of fun and advancement at Yawgoog Scout Reservation in Rockville, RI. Now in its 85th year, Yawgoog is the 5th oldest and and one of the best scout camps in the country. About 8000 scouts from RI, other states and even from some foreign countries camp there each summer. Besides the usual camp activities, scouts learn new outdoor skills and work on rank advancement and merit badges during the week. Yawgoog traditions for duty to God and country have been handed down for generations.
