Our Troop
Boy Scout Troop 91 turned 29 years old in 2002. Our Chartered Organization, American Legion Post 560 in Zimmerman, Minnesota has been our sponsor for a number of years. We enjoy an active partnership with Post 560 that has a long history of excellence and service to the community. So far in 2002, our Scouts earned many merit badges and three Scouts have earned their Eagle Rank. Our Troop did earned the National Quality Unit Award for the last 10 years consecutively.
Troop 91 meets at the Legion on Fremont Ave on Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 pm most weeks throughout the year. Occasionally we have a weekday outing scheduled to a swimming pool, roller skating rink, or other activity. Generally if the local schools are scheduled to be closed or closed for inclimate weather on a scout night, we do not meet. Our meetings consist of outdoor activities preparation, scouting skills, some kind of sports activity and working on advancment. The Troop Committee meets on the second Monday of each month. If there is a fifth Monday, we have a Court of Honor or other special event.
Troop 91 is active in Zimmerman, Minnesota and the surrounding communities. The Troop is a proud participant with community clean-ups, help Legion Post 560 each year, and we participate in the Wild West Days parade and other patriotic events.
The Troop is divided into three Patrols with between 4 and 8 boys per patrol. We have one Adult Scout Leader assigned as Advisor to the patrols. New scouts joining the troop work with the Troop Guides and the Advancement Coordinator to ensure all the necessary scouting skills are learned.
Like many other Troops, Troop 91 is a boy run troop. Our Junior Leaders are elected twice a year in September and February. The boys in August plan troop activities for the year. This plan is coordinated with the Scoutmaster and his Assistants. The final yearly activities plan is submitted to the Troop Committee so their planning to support the program can begin. The Troop currently runs three different programs, a New Scout Program, an Experienced Scout Program, and an Older Scout Program.
Troop 91 plans a year-round outing program. Alas, the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray. Although the boys plan a weekend outing every month we occasionally must cancel an outing because of unforeseen circumstances. Our program can be seen on the Schedule Page.
Troop outings are designed to provide the Scouts an opportunity to learn new skills, work on advancement requirements, and most importantly to have fun. Our outings include hiking, backpacking, and camping. We soon will have a Camping Equipment Checklist Page that provides our scouts information on what to bring on an outing. This checklist is also part of the parent’s handbook, given to the parents of each new scout upon joining.
Over the last couple of years Troop 91 has had a great Summer Camp at Tomahawk Scout Reservation in Wisconsin. This year, we went to Mountain Lake Ranch, in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Check out the Summer Camp Page for more details. In 2003, we will once again go to Tomahawk Scout Reservation.
