We are members of the Istrouma Area Council (located in Baton Rouge, LA.) and the Bogue Tuchenna District (headquartered in Mandeville, LA.).
We are officially chartered by the Mandeville Lions Club.
Our troop has been active for 30 years!
We have produced more than 70 Eagle Scouts!
We meet on three Tuesday evenings per month from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at The New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 4375 Hwy 22, Mandeville, La. (Map)
To join Troop 85, a boy must be 11 years old, or have completed the 5th grade, or have earned the Arrow of Light Award through the Cub Scout Program. An application to join must be completed by a parent or guardian.
We feel that Troop 85 is one of the best in the District and offers a boy many exciting experiences by which to learn and grow. The goal of the Boy Scouts of America is to help boys to develop into honorable men. Our Scouting activities move boys toward three basic aims: character development, citizenship training and mental and physical fitness.
We are a boy led troop, and our Troop meetings are run by the Senior Patrol Leader and the Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, all of whom are elected by the Scouts. Our meetings are held on every Tuesday at 7:00 PM at the New Covenant Presbyterian Church for the entire year except for holidays, exams weeks and the Tuesday after summer camp. One Tuesday per month is reserved for Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) meetings, where meeting agendas and activity schedules are planned by the Scouts.
Scouts are expected to dress in uniform for all Scout functions except the PLC. The Class A uniform (khaki shirt, Scout pants, Scout belt and Scout socks) is required for all regular troop meetings, evening meals at campouts and when traveling to or from an activity as a Troop, unless otherwise directed. The Class B uniform (Boy Scout or plain T-shirt, Scout pants, Scout belt and Scout socks) is worn for service projects and during daytime activities at campouts.
We have an active Troop Committee, and all parents and guardians are encouraged to participate. However, only registered adults can vote. Troop Committee meetings are generally held on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 PM at the New Covenant Presbyterian Church. There are many opportunities throughout the year for parents to participate in Scouting and to support our programs such as camping, providing transportation, teaching merit badge classes and assisting in fund raising. The success of our program is very much determined by direct participation and assistance of every Scout Family. Our Scoutmaster is Steve Kallet. Our Troop Committee Chairman is Philip Reppel.
