Boy Scout Troop 257 was first chartered on February 14, 1939 in Hermosa Beach. The troop was active for two years, but became inactive because of WWII. The troop was reestablished on April 30,1952 when it was sponsored by the Neighborhood Church of Palos Verdes Estates.

Over the years scouts have participated in a wide range of activities including hundreds of hikes, backpacking treks, and campouts; National Scout Jamborees at Fort A.P. Hill, Philmont Scout Ranch; canoe and whitewater rafting trips; and <... NEED MORE - does anyone have historical information?>

Many people have contributed their time and skills to making the troop activities a success, through service in troop positions as scouters, parents, community leaders, and youth leaders.

The position of Scoutmaster has always been a demanding one, but many others have also lead the troop as Asssitant Scoutmasters and Committee Members.

The scouting program has changes over the years, but the values and spirit have not.

Troop 257 wouldn't be called the PV Packers if they didn't hike a lot. The troop has hiked and backpacked all over California, although there are still many more peaks to climb. In April 1992(?) Scoutmaster Harry Blatnick received approval (from whom) for a local hiking award for the Palos Verdes Loop Trail and designed the patch. This 28-mile (45 km) trail, first mapped in 1985, circumnavigates the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The troop has also excelled in camporee events, swim meets, and other district and council events, receiving numerous awards.

Scouts from Troop 257 have often attributed later successes in life to the leadership skill acquired while in scouting. Many served as youth leaders while in scouting, with the most challenging position being that of senior patrol leader. Many dedicated youth have served as Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, or other leadership positions.

Rank advancement has always been an integral part of Troop 257, teaching youth crafts, disciplines, and leadership skills. In addition youth volunteer for commuity service and demonstrate scout spirit in other ways, always exemplefying the scout oath and promise. Troop 257 also recognized the achievement of its Eagle Scouts, who have achieved scouting's highest rank.
