Fall Camporee
Sat./Sun. October 11-13, 2002
This event is a special opportunity for all
scouts, especially scout, tenderfoot, second class, and first
class scouts. Each scout who participates in the camporee will
receive a neat camporee patch. If this is your first time participating
in a camporee, be prepared to enjoy yourself and meet many
new scouting friends. If you are returning, we again welcome you
to this very fun event.
A camporee is lots of fun, with many opportunities
to pass requirements for rank advancement and to earn merit badges.
There are special activities for scouts needing to pass second
class, and first class rank advancement (first aid, knots, plant
identification, orienteering, measuring, camping, cooking). Scouts
can perform service projects (up to 6 hours) which qualify for
star and life rank requirement #4.
Patrol will participate in all organized events
plus cooking and camping. This camporee is a backpack camping
event, demonstrating backpacking skills, planning, and equipment.
We will hike 5 miles, with a variety of activities along the trail.
The "events" for this Camporee will be in the Nature
Center Area. Each patrol/unit will have a preassigned time to
make the backpack hike. Either before or after their assigned
time they may visit the skills exhibits, merit badge counselors,
or vender exhibits..
You will be able to meet with merit badge counselors
for outdoor merit badges like camping, backpacking, wilderness
survival, hiking, cooking, pioneering, orienteering, and first
aid. If you have met all the prerequisites you may even be
able to complete the merit badge at the camporee.

Canyon Rd exit, off of Fwy 57, NE of Brea) - see map
- When: Fri. 11 October, 4 pm through Sun.
13 October, 11 am. Depart from Palos Verdes 5 pm on Friday from
Rolling Hills Estates City Hall parking lot (4045 Palos Verdes
Drive North)
- Special Events: (see brochure) Orienteering,
Animal & Plant Identification, Service Project, Knots, First
Aid
- Cost: $5 per scout plus cost of food (patrol
leader to plan meals); Free for adults (troop pays)
- What to wear: Full scout uniform (Class A)
at time of departure and for campfires. Red backpacking shirts
at other times.
NOTE: Scouts
MUST NOTIFY Patrol Leader by 24 September 2002 and pay
deposit to reserve your place.

MUST NOTIFY patrol leaders if they cannot attend or will
be arriving late.
Scouts must:
- bring equipment as indicated on check list
- bring additional equipment as directed by
the patrol leader
- bring anything needed to complete activities
/ pass rank requirements for: first aid, knife safety and use,
map and compass, orienteering, etc.
- be packed and prepared lunch for Friday and
Saturday meal (no lunch break; eat and walk)
- be prepared to backpack (we hike in with
everything)
- bring water container
- check with parents and verify troop has medical
release from
Patrol Leader must:
- Prepare list of scouts attending and their
current rank
- Prepare check list of rank achievement that
scouts plan to get passed at the camp (please discuss and review
requirements with scouts and advise on equipment they must bring)
- Prepare list of any merit badges that scouts
want to work on
- Notify SPL of their preference for time to
leave trailhead. (hourly 8 am - 1 pm)
- Make sure that the patrol brings all patrol
equipment as indicated the in section below and on check list
- Bring paper and pen to record what activities
scouts have completed and passed
- Obtain patrol participation cards for his
patrol upon arrival at camp.
Patrol must bring:
- stoves - LP gas stoves are permitted, no
liquid fuel, no charcoal on ground
- water containers (empty - there is potable
water close to camping areas)
- trash bags (must pack all trash out)
- FOOD
Adult camporee leader must bring:
- Troop 257 Camporee Unit Registration Form
- Remember this information is used to issue patches. Only the
number of people listed on the form and paid will be issued patches.
- Troop 257 Tour
Permit which has been signed by an approved
person).
- Troop 257 Camporee Confirmation Form (mailed
to you upon receipt of your fully paid registration).
No portion of any Unit will be allowed to
register unless they have all of the above.
Adults must bring:
- Food for themselves
- personal camping equipment (may be borrowed
from the troop - discuss with quartermaster)
- chairs
- copy of medical permission slips (and know
who has the tour permit and camporee confirmation form)
Note:
Parking is about 1000 feet from campsite. Vehicles
will be given parking pass.
Two adults must accompany each patrol during
the backpack hike.
Units may use only propane stoves in camp.
